General Tips

  • Drink only bottled water: Tap water isn’t safe to drink. Always opt for sealed bottled water, and ask for your drinks without ice.
  • Use UBER for all transportation (outside of the group itinerary): It’s safer, cheaper and tells you what you’re expected to pay. Regular taxis overcharge or scam tourists.
  • You need a visa for Egypt: You can obtain a visa to Egypt online through the official e-visa portal at https://visa2egypt.gov.eg/,or at the airport on arrival costs $25 (in cash, you can also change Euros). You get it before the passport control.
  • You can exchange money at the same place you get the visa: As a guide EUR 100 = EGP 5000 (the 1.5 hours UBER trip costs EGP 300). The amount you need depends on your spending habits. Exchange offices are easy to find around touristic areas if you need more cash later.
  • Tipping (Baksheesh) is expected for nearly everything: Hotel staff, drivers, restroom attendants, etc. Carry small bills and tip around EGP 10-50 per service.
  • The wedding venue will NOT serve alcohol: Neither will some hotels, if that’s important to you, check on Booking when you book the hotel, it should clearly mention having a bar.
  • Egypt is a beautiful chaos: Expect disporganization and differences. The best way to enjoy your trip is to stay open-minded, relaxed and curious.
  • Locals outside touristic areas may understand english but not speak it: They always find a way to communicate with hand gestures or google translate.
  • The weather in November is warm and sunny: Expect 25-28 degrees in the morning and lows of 15 degrees at night. Bring mostly summer clothes with layers to adapt to conditions.
  • Wifi is Sh*t in Egypt: Download Airalo app and buy a data package. If your phone doesn’t support e-sim, you can get a sim card at the airport near the baggage claim.
  • Be careful with street food: It can be delicious but read the reviews first.
  • Dress modestly in public areas or when entering touristic mosques.
  • Haggle in local markets: Ask for lower prices, it’s part of the experience.
  • Don’t take photos of police, military or government buildings: They have “No Photos” signs as you can seriously get in trouble.
